USSF Recertification Practice Exam

The assistant referee should raise the flag and notify the referee if they observe a foul in the penalty area that the referee has missed. This action is aligned with the responsibilities of the assistant referee, which include monitoring the play and assisting the referee in making decisions, especially regarding fouls and misconduct within critical areas like the penalty box.

When a foul occurs in the penalty area, it has significant implications for the match, potentially resulting in a penalty kick. It is crucial for the assistant referee to communicate this information clearly to the referee, ensuring that the correct decision is made for the integrity of the game. By raising the flag, the assistant referee can alert the referee to the incident, prompting the referee to stop play and adjudicate the situation properly.

Ignoring the foul or signaling for play to continue would undermine the assistant referee’s role and the overall fairness of the match, as these actions would not address the foul that occurred. Therefore, the correct course is to communicate the infringement to the referee through proper signaling.
